You will find plenty to see and do in this wonderful area of Somerset. To the east is the tiny city of Wells with its amazing Cathedral and the Bishops Palace and gardens. Glastonbury, Cheddar and Wookey Hole are very close by.
Only 4 miles away is the ancient town of Axbridge with its Royal Charters, pub, tea house, its beautiful church and a fascinating museum in a Tudor merchant's house.
To the west, the sea is just 4 miles with ice cream parlours and donkey rides on the beach.
Within easy reach you will find a couple of steam railways, Haynes Motor Museum, the Fleet Air Arm Museum, a Helicopter Museum and even a Lambretta Scooter Museum. There are also a number of stately homes to visit in the area. If you are a keen angler, there are some excellent fishing lakes in Somerset so you can make a fishing weekend of it.
Walking on the Mendips or by the sea are only a few minutes away. Nearby are two good gyms with spa and pool facilities at Rookery Manor and The Webbington both within 5 minutes drive of the cottage.
The wildlife is literally on the doorstep – and it is amazing. There are several varieties of fish in the river, including some large pike. You might spot rabbits, badgers, squirrels and various varieties of butterflies. Birdlife is amazing and we have seen woodpeckers, kingfishers, herons, swans, ducks, and hawks as well as the more common sparrows, blue-tits, gulls and, of course, swallows.
Good local pubs and restaurants are all within easy reach with good beer and cider and local produce on the menu.
Every year at Swallow’s Lodge there is an air of expectancy at the end of March. We look every day for the arrival of the swallows. This year they came on the 30th March, it was an amazing day. One minute there was quiet and the next minute, a frenzy of swoopings and twitterings that only went quiet at the end of the day when they had found their old nests in the eaves of the cottage, and went to sleep. This little bird had flown, with all its friends, all the way from Africa where it had been over-wintering in the warm climate. Goodness knows how long it took them.
Well now they have arrived, and they set about renewing their nests. Busy, busy all the time, swooping and twittering across the fields and back to the nest. So if you look carefully, now you can see tiny heads with a flash of yellow on each side of tiny beaks sitting very still and quiet in the nests. Their tiny heads just peaking over the top of the nests waiting for mum & dad to take it in turns to bring them a morsel of food. Mum & dad are noisy and swoop around the cottage to make sure there is no-one around before feeding junior. If a human is in the way, they sit on the telegraph wire and wait until the coast is clear before parting with their beak full of insects, for it seems to be breakfast, lunch and dinner all day long for the chicks.
What joy they bring as they cavort about the air with such precision.
It is just like aerial ballet.
Swallows Lodge will be available for reservations in the near future.
